Lausanne University of Art and Design (ECAL)
Lausanne University of Art and Design (ECAL) offers its students courses of study in the domain of art and design. Ranked among the world's top 10 universities of art and design, this school imparts sound knowledge to its pupils and provides stimulating experiences inclined towards the practical.
Founded in 1821 and currently headed up by Alexis Georgacopoulos, the ECAL offers courses of study at bachelor and master level in the field of visual communication, art and design. The quality of its teaching and its international reputation make the ECAL one of the most prestigious schools on the global art and design scene. This is why around 600 students representing more than 40 nationalities choose this institution for their course of study.
The ECAL showcases its work all over the world at trade shows, exhibitions and conferences, as well as the Pompidou Centre in Paris, Cooper Union in New York and Design Days in Dubai. Events such as these are a way of promoting the work done by students on the one hand and raising the profile of the school on the other, whilst coming face to face with the approaches of other artists.
Over the years, the ECAL has entered into numerous partnerships, be it with other universities of art and design or with top enterprises such as Alessi, Vacheron Constantin, Galeries Lafayette, Hermès, Hublot, Nespresso, etc. A partnership with the EPFL in the form of a laboratory shared with the EPFL, the EPFL+ECAL Lab, promotes innovation at the intersection of technology, design and architecture: www.epfl-ecal-lab.ch. These national and international networks enable the school to remain dynamic, give graduates easier access to reputable companies and facilitate the creation of their own structure.
The ECAL supervises applied research and development activities (aR&D) with regional and national authorities. It is a member of the Network of Expertise in Design and Visual Arts (Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts visuels - RCDAV) at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO), the Swiss Design Network (SDN) and the Swiss Art Research Network (SARN). One of the objectives of the aR&D department is to promote the conception of, and experimentation with, original and innovative artistic content in the emerging fields of visual communication, product design and visual arts.
