Lausanne OperaLa PéricholeFrom 26 December 2009 to 3 January 2010
The Lausanne Opera is presenting five performances of the opera “La Périchole” at the Salle Métropole in Lausanne with the participation of the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, the Choir of the Lausanne Opera and the Omar Porras Ballet Company. An opera bouffe in 3 acts and libretto by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy Mérimée, this is a joint production between the Lausanne Opera, the Théâtre du Capitole of Toulouse and the National Opera of Bordeaux. In 1828, Mérimée wrote Le carrosse du Saint-Sacrement, based on the life of an actress, the mistress of the viceroy of Peru in the 18th century, who was one day treated by the irritated monarch like a “Pera chola”, or “Indian dog”. La Périchole was born. The heroine of the opera bouffe is a street singer faced with choosing between love and a better life. A more nuanced humour than that of Offenbach’s preceding masterpieces underpins this work, which seeks to acknowledge the power of money. The figure of the heroine is all the more touching for it and each page of the score reveals the pure genius of Offenbach. For more information and online ticket sales: www.opera-lausanne.ch. |
