On stage there is an imposing metal structure that looks like an open builder’s yard. Men in work overalls making last minute adjustments as the audience enters the space. Slowly water begins to trickle through the metal structure until eventually it becomes a gushing waterfall, like an aquatic curtain that takes over the entire stage. Hypnotic, throbbing music accompanies the ten dancers as they begin to challenge the power of the water and the law of gravity. Choreographer Ivan Manzoni, artistic director of Materiali Resistenti, is an artist who is driven to break down traditionally held perceptions about dance by emphasising the high-energy athletic aspect of choreographic language. His work regularly incorporates equipment from the radical sporting world, such as harnesses, bungee ropes and surfing gear. Waterwall is a perfect illustration of Manzoni’s ongoing neo futuristic study into the potential offered by the encounter between human body and machinery and, in this case, water too. A spectacular performance, it relates the dynamics of the body to the sensuality of water and to the strength of metal. In Waterwall lies the evocative power of a performance with spectacular visual and aural impact that is a captivating experience for audiences of all ages. “Spectacular Water Choreography” © Gazet van Antwerpen
