Today’s financial management of public groups, just like the productive activities of the private sector, must link short-term interests with long-term ones. The viability of economic activities will be ensured, subject to finding a balance between financial objectives and environmental and social purposes.
From this perspective, the City of Lausanne intends to use every means within the public economy – taxation, funds and subsidies, city marketing, etc. – and have the investment capacity necessary to ensure the conditions of living together harmoniously – housing, transportation, public services, etc. – and to maintain the economic attractiveness of the region.

Publicize and Revitalize Lausanne

To attract new businesses to the region, along with business travellers and tourists, the authorities wish to develop city marketing by increasing Lausanne’s visibility and promoting its many assets.
Among the City of Lausanne’s assets are: its reputation as an Olympic capital city and a worldwide centre for sports federations; its higher education – EPFL, IMD, Catering college, etc.; its cultural assets and quality of life; and finally, its policy for sustainable development.

City-Business Partnership

This city marketing initiative also seeks to revitalize businesses in the city centre by bringing together local public  economic authorities and by defining the best possible events policy. This project is finalized by means of a partnership between the City, Lausanne Tourisme, and the Lausanne business owners (the Déclic association).

Supporting Learning

Lausanne’s city administration wishes to help young people enter the world of work.
A mentoring program is designed to support them for one year in the community’s technical service. The recruitment of mentors will also be developed.
In addition, to strengthen the links with the private sector, the City has joined together with Société Industrielle et Commerciale (SIC), which awards a prize each year to reward one company’s efforts in professional training.

Encouraging Private Initiative

The City will continue to support Lausanne Région, the Lausanne region’s community association in charge of economic promotion, among other things. The PERL Trophy (Prix Entreprendre Région Lausanne), for example, annually rewards praiseworthy projects from innovative businesses.
The City will also support the Swiss Design Center, a centre that encourages industrial design and welcomes young companies just starting up.

Eco-Awareness Trophy

The City of Lausanne and the Beau-Rivage Palace award the Eco-Awareness Trophy, an annual prize that honours the businesses, institutions, or people who demonstrate expertise and innovation with respect to environmental protection, water management, or waste reduction.
