Lausanne - Culture and Heritage
Organised on 31 July or 1st August depending on the location, Swiss National Day is a special day when we come together to celebrate our country with music, drinks, traditional food, fireworks and entertainment. There’s no shortage of occasions to celebrate in this region!
With an official speech, traditional food, the friendship glass and fireworks, Swiss National Day celebrations have followed the same programme for many years. In the Lake Geneva Region, this formula is always equally successful, with a few variations depending on where you are.
Lausanne, the region’s capital, plays a worthy part in the celebrations with events in the city centre, on the surrounding hillsides and, of course, down by the lake. Ouchy is the focus of the festivities with magnificent fireworks over the lake. Lake Geneva is one of the most romantic places in Switzerland to watch the 1st August fireworks, particularly out on the water on a special CGN cruise.
Château-d’Oex in the Vaudois Alps focuses on local products and sound and light fireworks, while in Villars-Gryon, a torchlight procession creates a magical atmosphere.
Nor forgetting the other 1st August celebration in Yverdon-les-Bains, which offers a more contemporary way of celebrating on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, with quirky events and lively concerts.
