Palud square

HeritageShopping
In the centre of the square is the town’s oldest fountain, adorned with a statue representing justice. Close by, a clock presents the history of Vaud in animated scenes every hour from 9:00 to 19:00. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings this is the site of the country market, which also sets up shop in the neighbouring pedestrian streets. Every first Friday of the month, it plays host to a craft market. Typical cafes, boutiques and large, elegant shops complement what this high-class district, which is completely pedestrianised, has to offer.

La Cité

ArchitectureHistoryHeritageShopping
This is a quarter full of typical small bistros and craft shops. To the north of the Cité hill, at Place du Tunnel, avenue César-Roux avenue and Place de l’Ours, shops and quirky bistros cry out to be discovered. It is around the Cité hill, sculpted by the Flon and Louve rivers, that the mediaeval town grew. Its cobble-stoned pedestrian streets as well as its monuments, the Cathedral of Lausanne, the St-Maire Castle and the Old academy, bear witness to that.

More info

HEMU (University of Music Lausanne) was founded in 2005 in the Conservatoire that dates back to 1861. The HEMU offers its students university-level training in classical and jazz music (bachelor and master) based on theory and practice, thus facilitating immediate access to the professional world on completion of the course. The HEMU belongs to the European Association of Conservatoires, which ensures that the quality of music teaching meets the highest standards. Close to 570 students representing around 45 nationalities attend this school.

A significant proportion of the work done at the HEMU is devoted to research. The aim of this is to establish links between education, interpretation and creation for the purpose of mutual enrichment. Research projects are often conducted in partnership with other institutions such as universities, foundations, audiovisual media groups and orchestras.

Famous virtuosos have attended HEMU, such as Sandrine Rudaz, nominated for the Jetty Goldsmith Awards, Gauthier Toux, named 2018 French revelation by Jazz Magazine, as well as Marina Viotti, Best Young Singer 2019 at the Opera Awards.
