Since 1904, every 31 December at midnight, the “Amis de la Cité” light up the Cathedral of Lausanne for the New Year. On this occasion, the inhabitants of Lausanne meet together on the Cathedral's Esplanade in a friendly atmosphere with champagne, mulled wine, tea and apple juice.
