Today, I’m leaving my electric bike at home and reaching for my favourite camera for a street photography session. When I’m travelling, I always try to read up on the best places, those not to be missed for a photographer. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Lausanne offers a variety of unique settings, so follow me to discover my 10 best spots!

1. The old city

Begin your photographic adventure with the old city for its architectural heritage and many viewpoints (particularly the highest point in the city, the Cathedral’s belfry). It’s also strategic to start your walk high up in the town so that you’re just walking down after that. Stroll along the paved streets, capture the colourful buildings and allow the mediaeval atmosphere emanating from the neighbourhood to charm you. The architectural details, picturesque squares and scenes of coffees enjoyed on a terrace are all photo opportunities that are sure to satisfy your creativity.

2. Lausanne’s galleries

Lausanne’s historical passageways, such as the Galerie du Commerce (behind the Saint-François post office) are, for some, relatively hidden treasures of the city. These passageways link different places and present a unique architecture that deserves to be photographed.

8. Chemin de la Ficelle

The Chemin de la Ficelle is a pedestrian path that follows the former line of the “Ficelle”, the ancestor of the M2 metro that linked the neighbourhood under the train station to the lakeside. Now, this path allows you to walk down to Ouchy away from the traffic and to capture scenes of daily life.

Lausanne is home to the Olympic Museum, a tourist and cultural landmark that also offers excellent photo opportunities. The elegant architectural lines and open spaces are fascinating subjects for photographers in search of beautiful compositions. For the full Olympic experience, go and see the IOC headquarters a bit further along the lakeside.
