Business and leisure tourism

A popular tourist destination, Lausanne has seen the number of visitors rise as its economy grows. Business tourism currently accounts for 65% of visits. The city’s thriving congress business can be attributed to the training and research sector, particularly in the fields of health, life sciences, energy and the associated technologies.

One million overnight stays a year

Events organised by the Olympic Movement are a huge boon for Lausanne’s tourism. Championships and meetings pull in visitors, for example, Athletissima, one of the six stages of the highly selective IAAF Diamond League, where the stars of world athletics compete. Leisure tourism accounts for 35% of visitors who come to discover, or indeed rediscover, the beautiful scenery of Lake Geneva. Lausanne registers about one million overnight stays per year, with overseas visitors accounting for 75% of this number.
