From the fascination of 19th-century Japanese elites with ancient Greece to the current influence of manga and Japanese animation on French-speaking artists, and the surge of mixed media in Europe in the 1980s, the exhibition bears witness to an unexpected dialogue between two cultures.

Two cultures that were never destined to meet, but whose encounter has given rise to a rich universe of perpetual reinvention. In addition to the creativity of Japanese artists and the quality of their work, “Kodai” highlights the power of antiquity and its representations, a hotbed of imagination across the seas and through time.

A rich cultural programme accompanies the exhibition.
