Companion, subject of study, symbol, mirror, or fantasy: the animal has never left the field of photographers since the medium's invention. “Animal Model” dives into two centuries of images to reveal how photography has shaped our view of animals - and profoundly influenced the way we love, exploit, or defend them.

From Auguste Bertsch's 19th-century micro-photographs to the snapshots of Martin Parr and Elliott Erwitt revealing the complicity between humans and animals, from Peter Beard's collages blending personal narrative and ecological concerns to Rinko Kawauchi's delicate observations, from Simona Kossak's quest for harmony to William Wegman's staged scenes: the exhibition traverses the work of the great photographers who have shaped our sensitivity toward living creatures. It also embraces the most inventive contemporary approaches - from the strange creatures of Augustin Rebetez and Robin Lopvet to the poetic worlds of Vasantha Yogananthan, as well as the bold experiments circulating on social media.

By highlighting the animal's massive presence in the collective imagination, “Animal Model” invites us to cross boundaries: between human and animal, between gaze and image - and perhaps between what we see and what we choose to see.
