Fulu Miziki, meaning "the sound of trash" in Lingala, is a band originating from the Ngwaka neighborhood, a maze of streets in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They define themselves as an Eco-Friendly-Afro-Futuristic-Punk collective from a future where humans have reconciled with the earth and themselves. They produce a new music style called Twerkanda, an explosive afro disco-house/post soukous played exclusively with instruments made from recycled materials they have assembled themselves. For several years, the members have focused on creating an orchestra from recovered objects found in trash bins, with instruments constantly evolving in search of new sounds.
The making of their own instruments, performance costumes, and masks is essential to their approach. Their unique sound supports a Pan-African message of artistic liberation, peace, and a critical view of the ecological situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and worldwide. For the collective, everything can be recovered and reimagined.
